Kisan,

Any technology is more expensive, unreliable and less beneficial in its early stages. Think about computers in the 80s. However, if renewable energy had been given the same level of investment we might have been in a very different position today..

I see lots of advances on the technology side. I think IT recycling has become much easier to do than 10 years ago. I still think we (in the U.S.) have a long way to go for recycling our home waste, though. I'm always amazed at seeing cans, bottles, and cardboard boxes in the garbage...right next to a recycle bin! I think it is easier than ever to recycle things, but not everyone seems to know the environmental benefits...still after 10 years.

Renewable energy e.g. solar energy was dumped in the US in 80s and it never came back.

Later I found out the reason behind it was that the raw material used for solar energy devices e.g. hot water systems needed more energy in conversion of metal ore to finished product used in the devices than the energy got from the sun during the life cycle of the metal.

If this is true then will renewable energy be a feasible solution?

Regarding the success of recycling - I'm not sure if we really are doing such a good job in this area. I think that in many cases we do it because we feel good about it, but we are not really thinking about the implications - such as the energy that is sometimes used to recycle something when it would be actually more efficient to just burn it..

I wrote a blog post about this here: http://www.talkclimatechange.com/2007/11/30/recycling-rubbish-is-often-rubbish/
